Nerd and Geek

I recently read an interview conducted by BCS (British Computing Society) with Steve Wozniak (co-founder of Apple).  Steve Wozniak's interpretation of a nerd and a geek:

Quoting Steve:

"A nerd follows technology but a geek is almost a word that's negative and implies a bad look - it's like geeks from the circus - strange looking weird characters and it's partly true as well! "

Nerd - It's the sort of person who cares more about IT and technology and they don't do a good job socially, thinking about others. That one of the problems, the engineer doesn't do a good internal marketing job understanding the actual user of what they are working on.

Today I am a schizophrenic

I am sittin here thinking what can I do before 5:30pm.  My mind is all over the place.  It is one of those days when I sit idle but my mind is in super-active mode.  Then I am hit with frustration thinking I should be progressing faster than the speed of light.  I get even more frustrated when I discover that there is not enough hard disk space on the C drive to install SQL Server 2005 SP2.  How can this happen in a storage company?  I shake my head and flip through the 700-page book on SQL Server 2005 Administration.  Sigh...maybe it is time for a cup of coffee from our newish coffee machine that spits out espresso, latte, cappuccino...but I don't even drink coffee until the arrival of this mean-caffeine machine....

My mind starts to get wilder and probe me with progressive ideas...you must exercise!  you must enrol in a course!  you must make a list of things to do before sunset!!!  Then I return to reality and remember I have work to finish before sunset...

Rottweiler cares for new born lamb

This happened somewhere in Wales...

An 11 month Rottweiler took over the role of mum to two lambs born with complications on a farm.  Molly, the Rottweiler slept with the lambs, protected them from other animals and licked them as an ewe would have done.

This is the first time a story is published about a Rottweiler caring for lambs.  According to experts, Rottweiler are originally bred as guard dogs.  They are not born aggressive.  They learn it from humans.

This story was published on the bbc website.

Go to the mattresses

What does it really mean by going to the mattresses. It was used as part of the dialogue in The Godfather, then in You've got mail. It simply means going to war or battle. I looked it up on Google and the term going to the mattresses originated in the 1530 where mattresses were place outside the tower in Florence as defence to protect the tower from cannon balls. http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/159900.html

Cini in Enderby

I attended a technical training in Leicestershire recently and on one of the evenings, my colleague and I went to a restaurant in Enderby named Cini. The food was gorgeous and we were spoilt for choice with such a good selection of starters, main and desserts. If I am around the area again, I would definitely stop by Cini for another meal!

Blessed Christmas everyone!

I remember last Christmas so well and now it is Christmas again. 2004 has been a fast year for me. A lot of good and challenging things happened along the 12 months leading to this Christmas. For a moment, I am putting the presents, Christmas trees, food and alcohol aside, to focus on the only reason why we continue to celebrate Christmas for over 2000 years, one generation after another. This is the reason: For to us a child is born, to us a son is given - Isaiah 9:6 Blessed Christmas everyone! Let's celebrate the birth of our King with joy and harmony.

Site Revamp

I am in the process of revamping the blogs that I maintain. I will gradually move all technical posts to a new URL and I will be using WordPress 1.2 as the blogging tool. Reason for doing so, I find blogger rather limited in what I would like it to do. By migrating to WordPress, I will have a blog that is searchable and I can organise the posts by categories. Once I have things in place, I will put up the new URL. The new URL will not replace this blog. I will still maintain this blog, just doing some rearranging :) I have also renamed some of the blogs I maintain and I have dropped Algodon AWS. I have introduced a drop-down style menu instead of having a series of links across the top of the page. I find that this help save space.

Save Karyn

Karyn was broke, had to pay off a $20,000 credit card debt and lost her job. How did she manage all that. She created a web site called Save Karyn, and asked for contributions from the public. If 20,000 people contributed $1 each or 10,000 people contributed $2 each, she would be able to pay off her debt. Well, she managed to raise $20,000 from contributions and paid off her debt. She has also written a book to tell about her experience. BBC has her story...

New entry. Gathering a few thoughts on what to write. I am a web developer. I have developed web sites commercially. I spend most of my awake time in front of the computer. I use mIRC quite a lot and my new found interest is in the area of computer animation. My pet companion is a white mini lop rabbit. She spends her time about the house hopping and playing around in mischief while I am at work. When I am not absorbed in work, I like watching movies and dining out in restaurants.
